“Weight is a key factor in racing,” explained Gibbs as he rolled his car onto special scales set up in his garage.
Throughout most of his racing career, Gibbs has avoided accidents and injury, although there were two wrecks that he could recall.
The worst was in 1986 when the throttle on his car stuck, sending him careening into a wall at high speed. The impact drove the door bars on the passenger side to the middle of the car. “It just shattered my shoulder blade,” recalled Gibbs.
Then just two years ago, Gibbs broke his hand after it became caught in the steering wheel when it “snapped around.”
Although he is just a newcomer to Fauquier County, Gibbs’ name is quickly becoming known in the local racing community.
Bealeton Auto Parts has signed on as a local j sponsor, providing Gibbs with spark plugs, oil changes and tune-ups.
“He’s always has been a good customer,” says Gary Heggenstaller, manager at Bealeton Auto Parts.
“After he had a run in at Manassas we thought maybe a little local support would help him out with the judges,” he said.
Heggenstaller described Gibbs as “a real nice guy.”
Leslie Gibbs said her husband is “aggressive” on the race track. “But I have never seen him take anybody out. He will back off and give them room.”
