One of the actual reasons for the project is to provide Jenkins’ Orchard with better access from U.S. 522 end of Yancey Road. The orchard already has paved access from the Route 231 end of Yancey Road and in any case at a distance of two miles from the intersection of U.S. 522 I doubt the road changes would inspire a significant increase in the number of retail customers willing to drive the distance when the apple stands on the main roads are so accessible, and to try to change Route 621 into a main road is ridiculous.
Why should VDOT be allowed to provide what amounts to private driveways for local businesses at public expense? At the hearing for this road “improvement” there was a petition presented against the project signed by 13 residents on Yancey Road and only four parties speaking in favor. The supervisors decided to go ahead in spite of this. Is this democracy? Or is it that one vote per person is being replaced by one voter per acre?
It is time the supervisors realize that a large majority of Americans are concerned about the environment and vote accordingly. Especially in
