Addendum
To the editor:
I wrote an article for the Rappahannock News’ April 28 issue included in the section on black history, “Slaves, Freemen, Integration — Rappahannock Stories.” The article was about Clarence Dearing and since a paragraph I considered important was omitted, I will include it here.
This is what Clarence Dearing had to say about slavery:
“I believe they (the slaves) were brought here against their will. In fact. I believe it’s the best thing that ever happened to them, but still they were handled so brutally.' You know, just like you’d take a carload of cattle, load ’em on a train, take ’em somewhere, and sell ’em, beat ’em and.knock ’em around.
“The black man had a rough time of it. Black man has lots to be thankful to God for. If it hadn’t been for God stickin’ by ’em, they would never have gotten this far.”
