island is the Mcllhenny back yard. It is more formally named “The Jungle Gardens of Avery Island” and is a fascinating place. The jungle gardens include an alligator pool and, as we could see, the alligator pool included at least one alligator.
There he was, lying at a right angle to the^ water's edge, the tip^>f his snout about six inches from shore, totally motionless. His right eye, as I could observe in my journey around him to make the most 1 could of my first look ever at an alligator in his more or less natural habitat, was baleful, and his left eye was equally so. All his big jagged alligator teeth were showing: nothing moved.
