Assure youngsters that there are no animals out there that can hurt them. Tell them to yell at the noises they hear. If it’s an animal, it will run away. Fear of the dark and of “lions and tigers and bears” are big factors in panicking children into running. They need strong reassurance to stay put and be safe.
