“1 saluted,my father with a shot of bourbon and 1 was off again. I was hospitalized, 1 dried out and then my mother died. Again, I had no program, no support group. I was alone in the world with my alcoholism.
“I got drunk. I was hospitalized. I sobered up. I got drunk again. I was arrested. Even that didn’t scare me enough. I’d go to treatment programs and I’d slip out to my car at the treatment center for a drink.
“I wasn’t willing to accept that I couldn’t manage my own life. I couldn’t throw away my own ego, my arrogance. I couldn’t admit that I couldn’t do it by myself.
“I was miserable when I was drinking and I was miserable when I was dried. I tried suicide for attention, half hearted attempts. I was hospitalized eight times in one year. I was jailed a few times and I had no memory of what I’d done. I lost my last good job—and then I tried suicide again—this time seriously. I was commited to a state psychiatric hospital.
