After a stop at McDonald’s for lunch, we headed for Suffolk and the Dismal swamp. The Dismal Swamp is located in southern Virginia and northern North Carolina. Lake Drummond is near the middle of the swamp. For the most part, though, the swamp is covered with forest consisting of Beech, Oak, Pine, Cedar, Cypress and Holly trees. There were a lot of Red Maple flowers all over the ground.

The Dismal Swamp contains a peat layer of the topsoil, which is abQut six inches deep. The next layer contains clay and sand. The swamp is, of course, very marshy, and wet. If you ventured into the swarhp it would be a good idea to wear boots.

There was much plant growth in the swamp. You could survive in the swamp if you needed to. There are many berries which are edible. We encountered one plant with bay leavs among the other various plants
