encouraging reading nas always been one of the projects of the Virginia Extension Homemakers and annually, it a warns certificates to members who read five books or more. There were approximately 8,000 reading certificates awarded in 1977 when the motto was “Learn to Read - Read to Learn.”
Because of this special interest in reading, it was appropriate for the clubs to contribute to the Newman Library at Virginia Tech.
Extension Homemakers have helped to provide education for many individuals. Its series of scholarships are presented annually and in 1982 amounted to $6,000 worth of scholarships.
The scholarships are named in honor of the pioneers of the organization - Ella G. Agnew, Mrs. Guy Roop, Maude E. Wallace and Hallie Hughes.
