a bar bill and I didn’t want people to see how much I drank. I managed to function for years with a bottle of vodka in my desk drawer at work.

“I had a series of jobs— over 100. And I lost them all. I always found fault with somebody else. When I was fired, when I lost my friends, it was always someone else’s fault, never my own. I could rationalize anything. No one but Mary (Eddy’s wife) ever confronted me with my drinking.
“I put on 45 pounds and ended up in the hospital with hepotitis and mononucleosis. And still, I had an internist who wouldn’t tell me I was an alcoholic until Mary hammered him over the head and said ‘If you don’t, he’s going to die.’
