wanted a play both delightful and important,” said Rhinoceros director Stuart Eiland, of the Ionesco comedy opening tomorrow at the Gay Street theater in Washington. With the spring production of Rappa- ' hannock Players, Eiland believes he’s filled the bill on both counts.
“Ionesco often said that he relied on the Marx brothers for his inspiration,” Eiland said. “In this play he uses timing, sight gags and rapid fire dialogue for both humor and impact. When it works, it’s very entertaining.”
While a social commentary on man’s compulsion to follow the crowd may seem a far cry from the antics of Groucho Harpo, Chico and Zpodo. the Players’ production of Rhinoceros provides hilarious family entertainment on many levels, combining slapstick and subtlety in a farce that will make viewers of all ages laugh out loud.
