Included in the book are the histories of all the county’s religious denominations - not only the colonial Anglican, Quaker, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist congregations - but the Catholics, independent Christian, and Jewish houses of worship, as well as a myriad of black congregations.

Unusual aspects, not found in most county histories, cover the social and cultural life of the area, music and poetry, and such diversions as the county’s contribution to the history of Virginia’s early fox hunts, jousting tournaments, baseball, football, basketball - and even hunting and fishing. A chapter covers medical aspects, detailing prescriptions, cures, and procedures in use from colonial times through to this century.
