was depressed, suicidal, I wouldn’t eat. 1 was incredibly alone. I couldn’t eat. Life wasn’t worth it. The doctor said if I didn’t eat, they’d throw me out. The hospital was terrible but I didn’t have any place left to go. I didn’t want to live but I was afraid to die.
"My counselor said, ‘You will do what we tell you to do.’ And after all those years, all the jobs, all the money, all the pain, I said okay. He told me I had a terminal case of self-pity and I started listening.
“But I had this incredible fear of the future. I knew if I didn’t find a higher power, a power bigger than me. 1 wouldn’t survive, I couldn’t stay sober.
“I talked to one of the chaplains at the hospital and he said, ‘You don’t have to believe, just act as if you believe. Pray to have your fear removed. You don’t have to know who you’re asking. Just pray.’
