The Williamsburg jail, spelled gaol in colonial times, was a brick building, just behind the Capitol, that housed the prisoners, who were on trial, as well as the jailer and his family. The debtor’s quarters were much bptter than the cells for criminals. The debtor had a mattress to sleep on, a desk, a chair, and a lamp. The criminal prisoners had only hay. The women inmates livved above the house while the male inmates lived in cells beside the house. Outside the brick walls were the stocks which we tried on for size.

One of our groups saw the instrument makers shop. Lutes, fiddles and round back guitars are made there. The guides explained that instrument makers always made one instrument from start to finish to be sure of the same sound throughout the process.
