A healthy crop is one preventive measure against the damage thistles can do. There are forage crops that compete most effectively against the Canada thistle, emerging early in the spring and cutting off the light and oxygen available to the weed.
Some forage crops like alfalfa recover more quickly from mowing than the thistle, so have an advantage in a mowed field. Winter wheat and barley compete more effectively with Canada thistle than spring wheat or barley. Because thistles are perennial, they get a good head start on later-planted crops.
