There are a couple of steps parents can take at home if they fear their child is lost. Call the sheriff quickly. The search area expands so rapidly due to the victim’s possible movements that an immediate response is critical. A call to the sheriff that’s later cancelled isn’t wasted: it gives the trackers practice and helps keep them alert. A slow response is dangerous, especially if bad weather wipes out tracks and exposure is a worry.
Parents should be available for interviewing. Clues that lead to finding the child in good shape usually come from family and friends who remain on the scene and talk openly and accurately with the search leader and other rescue personnel. Remember, any personal information will be kept confidential.
