realize that if they sit down and stay put, one of a few hundred people will find them. Some are afraid of strangers or men in uniform and do not respond to yells. Some have actually hidden from the searchers they knew were looking for them.

Parents should footprint their children. It’s a five minute exercise that cuts down the length of a search by several hours. Have a child step on a piece of aluminum foil or a soft surface such as carpeting or pine duff. Mark the foil of this print with the child’s name. Armed with this search tool, trackers can separate your child’s footprints from others in the area and can quickly determine the direction of travel.
