A week ago comment was made in this space about the conclusions of a study by the National Commission on Excellence in Education. The study, commissioned two years ago by Secretary of Education Terrell H. Bell, concerned itself with the quality of public instruction in the United States.
The study concluded very little education was taking place, and that little was, on balance, devoid of anything approaching excellence. The title of the commission’s devastating report, “A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform” just about says it all. It noted: “The educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a nation and as a people.”
Now, that is strong stuff. If a similar commission had concluded that our future as a nation and as a people was being so imminently and surely threatened by some foreign power, the call to arms would be echoing through every village and farm.
