iit'i wuik increases. Last Christmas time she filled orders for sixteen hams, five turkeys, 18 fruitcakes and “other cakes and biscuits and things."
When the busy spring and summer social season and the Christmas rush are over, does Lottie limit herself to her full time job as a domestic and sit by the fire during the long winter evenings? Not a chance. Last winter she made 18 quilts during the seasonal lull in Rappahannock’s social life.
"1 learnt myself to sew when I was just young,” Lottie said. She remembers making her daughters’ dresses from the printed feed sacks sold at the time. “They turned out real pretty," she said.
Now, she makes quilts to order, following any pattern and enlarging the bright quilts to any size. “I've even made king-size quilts," she said.
