They looked for proj>erty in the area without finding what they wanted and were about ready to give up when they read Sperryville realtor James Leake’s ad for Oak Hill. “The ad said ‘Needs tender loving care.’ Well, I’m a building contractor. That’s just what I was interested in,” Arthur explained, adding that he had specialized in restoration work on Long Island.
“The ceilings were on the floor. It had no plumbing, no kitchen and very little electricity,” Peggy recalled of their first look at the historic home two years ago. “The grass was to our w'aists and the hedge was two feet high but we loved it!”
They’ve spent the time since redoing the house that served as General Sigel’s headquarters in the Civil War and restoring a log cabin on the grounds.
