as witn many other weeds, there are many ways to approach the problem. The best solution might be found in a combination of several methods of control: cultural, cropping, chemical and biological.
Because of the food reserves mentioned, cultivation of the infested field works best if it’s done at the time when food reserves are the lowest: four to six weeks after the first plant emerges. If it is done thoroughly and repeated every three weeks, most of the thistle problem can be solved.
First, plow and disk. Then, cultivate four inches deep when new shoots appear. About ten days after each cultivation new shoots appear. If they’re broken up within 15 days of appearance, they will never be able to furnish food to the roots.
Mowing is also effective if a heavy stand of a competitive crop (such as alfalfa) is present. Mow at least twice during the season.
