Adults: The adults emerge in July/August and do not stay on the plants for very long. They seek shelter from the summer heat and then hibernate in the winter. They overwinter as adults and emerge in the spring, at the time of thistle elongation, to lay eggs on the developing buds. Each adult lays an average of about 200 eggs. The adults are dark brown and about 10 to 15 mm long. There is usually one generation per year.
