“In my late twenties and early thirties I gradually started drinking all day long. I drank only beer and I’d have three or so between getting up and getting to a job.
“Somewhere in there my mother had serious problems with alcoholism—convulsions and d.t.’s I had to commit her for treatment several times. That experience kept me from drinking hard liquor. I stuck to beer unless it was a special occasion.
“I think I tried to fool myself. I’d say, ‘no more drinking except f r wine with meals.’ So, suddenly, I’d be going out for a lot of fancy meals. Then I’d realize I was fooling myself and go back to beer.
