Randall Updike noted that, in addition to cutting entry level salaries, the RhA proposal distributed the 4''( by smaller increases at the upper end of the seniority system. “The entry level cut doesn’t bother me as much as this," he said. “Rut the older teachers may want to retire soon. To fail to give them equal raises will affect them the rest of their lives.”
Nelson Lane objected to both of the points raised by Updike. “This is an unseen swindle, ‘vocus-poeus’ he said angrily. “The new teachers who will lose money — they’re the ones who need it most. They’re just starting out — they don’t have as much money as you (indicating Smith). This is highway robbery.”
