“The cause, at bottom,” wrote Kilpatrick, “is that the American people simply don’t give a damn about their public schools.” He prefaced his conclusion by listing a series of studies over the past three decades which, while perhaps less prestigious, had come up with essentially the same findings as those in the commission’s report.
Kilpatrick, of course, is right. And because he is right, he raises new alarms fully as frightening as those in the report itself.
The parents of children presently in school presumably received their educations before the decline set in, or at least before it became acute. If they are unconcerned about the condition of public instruction, and are insensitive will the present crop of school children be when they grow up Snd become parents?
The commission report devotes a major part of its findings to the impact of the nation’s lagging potential in the technical fields, but it also emphasizes the dangers of our narrowing horizons in the arts, social studies and general information about the world society in which we live.
