Literacy program
The Child Care and Learning Center is planning to undertake an adult literacy program in Rappahannock County in conjunction with the Literacy Volunteers of America, a national literacy effort. Eighteen county residents attended a presentation by LVA on Sept. 11 and indicated their interest in being literacy volunteers.
A volunteer training session is tentatively planned for early December and will be a joint effort with a group being started in Warrenton. Anyone interested in further information should contact Mary Tauss at the center at 675-3237.
Workshop on play
A workshop for The Child Care and Learning Center staff and parents will be held at the Rappahannock Library on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The topic will be “The Importance of Play and its Relationship to Later Learning.”
Dr. Martha Ross, professor of early education at James Madison University and program consultant to the center, will lead the workshop with the assistance of her JMU colleague, Professor Diane Faqua. Two other parent workshops are being planned for later in the fall.
Settle reunion
The fifth annual Settle family reunion Will be held on Sept. 29 at the Rappahannock Park on Rt. 211 near Washington.
Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish and/or a beverage. Everyone is welcome.
Baptist Home yard sale
The Virginia Baptist Home in Culpeper will have its Sixth Annual Crafts and Yard Sale on Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. No admittance will be allowed until 9 a.m.
Some items to be sold include: furniture, clothing, jewelry, irons, electric heaters, flame-retardant curtains, lamps, radios, televisions, sewing machines, luggage, electric fans, toasters, pictures, handmade crafts and baked goods.
Proceeds from the sale are designated for the renovation of the Culpeper residential buildings and health care center.
Methodist conference
The Rappahannock Charge Conference will be held Sept. 22 at the Sperryville United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. A reception will begin at 7 p.m. in honor of the new district superintendent, E. Thomas Murphy, Jr., of Charlottesville.
