Following the apprentice race is a $3,000 maiden timber race at three miles. Two turf races end the meet, the first at a mile and a quarter for maidens, the second at two miles for amateur riders.

For foxhunting enthusiasts the Middleburg race committee has a unique package this year. For $350 two people will be able to spend the weekend in the area and go hunting on Friday with the Piedmont Hounds, on Saturday with the Middleburg Hunt and on Sunday with the MiddleburgOrange County Beagles — as well as watch the races both days.

As an added bonus, 15 people from the hunting package will be selected to ride a drag hunt around the race course following the races on Sunday. The rider showing the best form will be honored as the ‘Hunter Champion of America’ and will be awarded a special trophy donated by Duncan Reed.

Morven Park Races

Virginia steeplechasing moves to Morven Park near Leesburg on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Safe and attractive polyvinyl wings will adorn all the fences at Morven this year. There will be six races at the pleasant rolling course, starting with a maiden claimer at 2 p.m.

Second race to go is a straight maiden 'chase over two miles for a $4,000 purse. A non-winners of two, again at two miles, is slated for the third race. The fourth race will be an open claiming race, with a $7,000 tag, for 4-year-olds and up.

A $10,000 handicap race at 2V-> miles will be the day’s feature brush race, followed by a $5,000 open timber race at 3'/4 miles.

Morven is unfortunate this year in that the meet conflicts with meets at Fair Hill, . Md., and Geneseo, N. Y. Hopefully Virginia horsemen will support the local race and fill the card.
