The Wakefield School Soccer team has begun vigorously preparing for the upcoming soccer season. The team has been training for the difficult schedule of 17 games that lie ahead of them. Anything less than an all-out effort would not produce the perennial success characteristic of the Wakefield soccer program.
In last year’s season, the team finished with a commanding 13-2-1 record. However, many of the integral positions in the line-up were held by last year’s seniors.
The replacement of those graduates will be one of the more difficult tasks that the team will have to overcome before the season commences. Returning starters David Rowzie, of Amissville, and Larry Tarr, of Warrenton, will anchor the forward line along with several new players and junior varsity players from last year.
And, perhaps at the team’s strongest positions, Jorge Gonzales, of Huntly, Ed McGushin, of Haymarket, and John Landis, of Front Royal, will collaborate for a well-experienced midfield.
However, the soccer team’s defense will be trying to replace all four starting full backs of last year who allowed an average of less than two goals per game. Thus, much of the team’s success this year could be hinged on the performance of the defense.
As Coach Uli Mayer has stated, “Those players who were second string last year are the players who will have to do well this year if we are to win.”
