When Jay Trump went to the post at the Grand National meeting in Maryland on April 21,1962, he was a baby in the timber ranks — a mere 5-year-old. Trained and ridden by young Crompton “Tommy” Smith and owned by Mary C. Stephenson, the former Charles Town sprinter won off alone in his first attempt under rules.
Six weeks later he accounted for the Radnor Hunt Cup almost on the same terms. In 1964, Jay Trump accomplished the near impossible. In a period of 21 days, he raced 10 miles, jumped 56 fences in 21 minutes and 41 seconds and captured My Lady’s Manor, the Grand National and the Maryland Hunt Cup.
