ollowmg the maiden timber at Great Meadow there will be a featured brush race, the $10,000 Laura A. Lawrence allowance chase at 2Vi miles. The day’s fourth race is the featured timber, the $15,000 International Gold Cup at 3'A miles. This race helped Thomas L. Ashbridge Ill’s Double Sparkle tie for Timber Horse of the Year honors last year, and should prove equally exciting this year.
Final race of the day will be the Devil’s Bag flat race, named in honor of James P. Mills’ 1983 2-year-old champion.

Montpelier Hunt Races
Last year, as the steeplechase season began, the prospect of losing one of the older meets on the fall schedule loomed strongly on the horizon.
Fortunately, the threat never materialized.
Instead the Montpelier meet, which had been jeopardized by an inheritance squabble, went off without a hitch, much to the delight of the magnificent estate’s new owners, the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
For 48 years the late Marion duPont Scott, “the Grand Dame of Steeplechasing”, ran the Montpelier meet. Mrs. Scott died shortly before the 1983 meet, but the races still ran. Last year, the late Mrs. Scott’s niece Jean Ellen duPont Shehan funded the Montpelier meet. This year the meet will be sponsored by the National Trust.
Montpelier’s new owners are changing little at the meet, however. As in the past, admission and parking will be free.
The first race, a maiden hurdle chase at VVi miles, is at 1:30 p.m. Second race, the Virginia Plate, is at a mile on Montpelier’s classic dirt course. This race is for horses that have not won a race in the last two years other than maiden or claiming.
The day’s feature race is the $7,500 Noel Laing Steeplechase Handicap at $7,500. Last year’s winner of the Noel Laing, Marianne Smith-McDaniel’s Le Sauteur, is currently leading the horse standings in money won this year.
The $5,000 Marion duPont Scott Montpelier Cup will be the fourth race. This is a two-mile brush race for 4-year-olds and up which have never won $3,000 twice.
Montpelier’s final race is a $4,000 hurdle race for 3-year-olds at l3A miles.
