Pillar Farm’s Chammsky, with two consecutive stakes scores (National and Midsummer), could be in the running if he can return to that form. He came down with a fever in Saratoga, which might have affected his performance up there, and should like the extra distance of some of the fall’s major races.
From Mr. Sheppard’s barn a number of possibilities could develop. Of course, Flatterer is pounds the best horse in the country, and if he can handle the 170-pound weights he will be a force to be reckoned with all fall. Gateshead, a versatile jumper and turf performer, was very impressive beating Le Sauteur at the Spa and could be a top horse if he stays over fences. Timber Bay Stable’s Eremite won the Carolina Cup in the spring before tailing off, but if he returns to that early season form after a good rest he could carry the stable.
And then when you consider that Mr. Sheppard also has Will Farish’s Twas Ever Thus (a fast closing second in the Cafe Prince), Double Wrapped (a top female ’chaser) and the youngster Polar Parallel, it would be no surprise if he comes up with his seventh Eclipse champion.
