Few athletes in any sport — whether it be football, basketball or horse racing — are identifiable solely by their first name.
But mention “Speedy" to anyone familiar with American steeplechasing and they’ll know at once that you’re talking about jockey I).M. SmithwickJr.
Obviously, “Speedy” is only a nickname. Speedy’s real first and middle names — Daniel Michael — are not nearly as well known.
“I was born three weeks early.” says Speedy. “That's how I got my name.”
