At the Spa the cagey veteran was at his best, winning on four of five mounts with $60,000 in purses. That brought his season total to $107,170, which is well within reach of Mr. Hendriks and Mr. Houghton.
Mr. Teter, the 1984 champion, has struggled all year long and stands in sixth position among the jockeys. Riding first string for the Janet Elliot stable, the 23year-old Unionville, Pa., native has won only four jump races, well off the pace of last year when he won 25.
George Strawbridge Jr.’s Augustin Stables is atop the owners’ list thus far this year with $97,440 in earnings via 10 wins from 12 horses. However, with the loss of stable star Double Reefed it may be difficult to maintain a lead throughout the fall.
Gateshead, a winner at Saratoga in his first jump start in a year, will have to carry the ball for a depleted Augustin bam, which started only two horses at the Spa.
Certainly within striking distance would be William Pape, in whose name the mighty Flatterer runs. The defending twotime Eclipse award-winning champion has been on the track only once this year (a second in the Midsummer) but with several; major stakes slated for the fall he is bound to boost Pape’s figures beyond its $64,770 level. Polar Parallel, a homebred halfbrother to Flatterer, has earned $35,900 for Pape this year with three wins (two in Saratog) from four starts.
Mrs. Michael Sanger also has a chance of increasing her bankroll later in the year with Uncle Edwin and Danmore who have earned a combined $60,500. Uncle Edwin won three races in the spring, including the
