• Check grapevines for mummied berries — victims of black rot. Pick them and dispose of (do not compost) before they can spread the disease.
• Harvesting guidelines: Pears should be picked at the hard, ripe stage and allowed to finish ripening off the tree. The base color of yellow pears should change from green to yellows as the fruit approaches maturity. Apples should separate readily from the trees when lifted gently upwards.
• Fall is usually cool and moist and a good time to plant trees and shrubs. Research has shown that roots will continue to grow until the soil freezes, which is about Thanksgiving. This is true for both evergreens and deciduous plants. The best time for lawn construction is from mid-August to mid-September for cool-season grasses. Seeding at this time allows for a long fall growing period, when temperatures and moisture conditions are most favorable and weed competition is at a minimum. By the time cold weather arrives, the grass is fairly well established and ready to grow and thicken early the following spring.
