As the only hunt meeting in the country to offer pari-mutuel wagering, Fair Hill’s expense of renting the mutuel machines and clerks adds up to a hefty fee. Without the wagering dollars from the public ($16.50 per capita last June), it’s difficult to make ends meet. Mr. Groat is optimistic the eight races offered will fill with enough betting interests to satisfy the Maryland State Racing Commission.
The grand old lady of steeplechase tracks remains the acme of all the country meetings, where every minute of action is in view. There is not one meeting that can claim to have the attentive audience that Fair Hill does, for from the Aintree and Fair Hill stands, each horse is in view at all times while on the track. The race card includes a pair of flat contests, a timber race, a $10,000 allowance feature over brush for horses who have never won three races (over fences), a straight maiden for 3-yearolds and another for 4-year-olds and upward. There will also be a claiming ’chase for horses in the $15,000 down to $10,000 price range.
