Jolly Roger started 49 times and was first on 18 occasions and second and third nine times each. He was trained by Vincent Powers, who was a leading American jockey on the flat and over fences.
Jolly Roger was a big, strong looking chestnut by Pennant and had ’chasing blood in his veins, for his second dam was the great hurdle mare, Forget. He bowed a tendon during the running of the 1930 Temple Gwathmey and was pensioned off to the farm. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1965.
When Mrs. T.A. Randolph’s homebred Bon Nouvel was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976 he was in the company of such greats as Northern Dancer and Ruffian.
As the leading steeplechaser of 1968, Bon Nouvel won five of 15 starts. Partnering him through this impressive feat was the great Joe Aitcheson (inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978), plus a sizeable load of lead in most every race as he was the horse to beat each time he stepped out on the turf. He was a bay gelding by Due de Fer-Good News by Happy Argo. Trained by “Mikey” Smithwick, who himself was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975, Bon Nouvel earned a total of $164,128 racing over fences. His victories included stakes
