Usually also present with the stewards in the tower, unless it is not located right on the finish line, are three placing judges and a timer.
Placing judges at some meets have the help of video and placing cameras to make their jobs easier, but sometimes only their eyes and senses can help them.
“The placing judges’ jobs are not that easy,” says Mr. Golgan. “Especially in a flat race when four or five horses come across the finish line at the same time. But, they get better with experience. We try to encourage them not to go by the numbers on the horses, as these might get covered up or fall off. Instead we ask them to go by the jockey’s silks. ”
Officials at a steeplechase meet are picked by the racing committee of the meet and submitted to the NSHA for approval.
“We look at each submission individually,” explains Mr. Colgan. “For the most part we are reluctant to disapprove anyone. We can’t expect everyone to be a 20year veteran. But, we probably would disSee
