Last year’s winner Rico Slave will not be in competition although he is fit and hunting with the Brandywine Hounds, according to his owner, Carl J. Meister Jr. of West Chester, Pa. Rico Slave, at age 15, left the maiden ranks at the Genesee meeting ridden by the owner’s son Jay, and the pair went on to finish third in the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup last season.
In a remarkable effort to improve the quality of racing at the Monmouth meeting near Red Bank, N. J., the race committee headed by Schuyler Van Vechten decided to tear out the timber course and cancel the prestigious Monmouth County Hunt Cup after more than half a century.
The narrow valley race course will now be able to be widened for the brush course, and the twisting, turning barrel race that was once the flat course will also benefit.
The seven-eighths mile track set between two steep hillsides that draws nearly 35,000 people to its banks each October will offer a six-race card, including the $25,000 Metcalf Memorial Cup for brush horses. These conditions have not been announced at this writing, but are expected to attract horses who have not won $12,000 once in 1984 or’85.
Mason Houghland Lampton, whose grandfather was among the great foxhunters of his era and author of Gone Away, was hot content to rest on his laurels as instigator of the Hard Scuffle meeting at his hometown of Louisville, Ky., but decided there was a need for steeplechase racing in his new hometown of Columbus, Ga.
