“Flatterer is by far 20 pounds better than any horse we have running today,” National Steeplechase and Hunt Association Racing Secretary William Gallo Jr. said by phone last week from his office at Belmont Park. “They won’t beat him no matter what weight he carries.”
Flatterer carried 170 pounds in the Midsummer Handicap at Monmouth and was beaten in the final strides, giving away 21 pounds in his only race since winning at Camden, S. C., last fall.
Primed and ready for the New York Turfwriters Cup at Saratoga, the only exercise Flatterer, the star of William Pape’s stable, got was a van ride from Jonathan Sheppard’s Unionville, Pa., farm. The stakes race was cancelled.
