Former Flint Hill man a hero
Biological technician Dabney Eastham, son of Dabney and Margaret Eastham of Flint Hill, was honored for having performed the Heimlich maneuver on a woman choking on a bite of her lunch.
Eastham, who works for the Bureau of Land Management in Rock Springs, Wyo., was presented the bureau’s Exemplary Act Award at a recent awards ceremony.
A fellow employee began choking on a piece of her lunch when Eastham performed the maneuver.
Eastham learned the Heimlich technique when he worked as a Student Conservation Association volunteer in Salem, Ore.
Boyce birthday Saturday
The small town of Boyce in rural Clarke County will celebrate the beginning of its 75th year as an incorporated town with a large birthday party Saturday, Sept. 21.
The day-long activities run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and feature an arts and crafts sale, entertainment, food, a large birthday cake, the annual Boyce Fire Department’s chicken barbecue and the firemen’s auction. There will be several field games, including a good natural tug-of-war pitting local residents against members of the fire company.
The town, named for a retired colonel who lived nearby, was founded in the late 1800s when Shenandoah Valley Railroad Co. stretched its lines north. The town grew up at the intersection of the railroad and old Route 50, a main corridor for commerce between Washington, D.C. and Winchester.
Today, the town is on Route 340 two miles north of its junction with Route 50. •
