It was the taking of Larry Kubin — a linebacker drafted out of Penn State in 1981, a year before his scheduled graduation, a raid that so irritated coach Joe Patemo that Redskin scouts are now banned from that campus — that bears mentioning.
In these years since 1981, while on the Redskins’ team, Kubin has seen limited service, some on special teams, some in filling in for other linebackers who were either injured or in need of rest.
Larry was known to be a most loyal Redskin, uncomplaining and dedicated. His failing, if he had one, was a tendency to philosophize about the game and about himself.
At critical moments, it was believed, he was inclined to reflect on the meaning of the game, or on life, when immediate action was called for.
