“The main thing to make you successful as a jockey is to have good horses,” Speedy admits. “I’ve been very lucky this season, I’ve gotten good horses.
“I don’t care if you ride better than John Francome (champion English jump jockey and one of the world’s best), you can’t win on a bad horse. A bad horse really makes you look bad.”
But whatever type of horse he rides, Speedy thoroughly enjoys being a jockey because of its unique attractions.
“It’s very rewarding to ride a horse that’s jumping weli,” he says. “And, at the same time, it’s rewarding to ride a bad jumper and stay on!”
The rewards, however, are not the only attractions racing holds for Speedy.
“It’s flirting with danger really,” the young jockey admits. “I don’t think there’s anything else like it. You’ve got to get in sync with your horse. It’s very exciting. That’s the only reason I do it really. I sure can’t do it when I’m 40, so I might as well do it now while I can still bounce and my bones have a chance to heal.”
