Bemie Houghton, riding predominately for his trainer-father Ronnie, has a dozen jump wins and one on the flat for 25 points. His childhood rival, Ricky Hendriks, and the veteran Jerry Fishback are knocking at the door, however, with nine jump wins each and 19 and 18 points respectively.
Mr. Houghton, a 22-year-old who owns a farm at Oxford, Pa., has had his greatest success aboard Le Sauteur, a three-time winner through the spring and summer. His uncle Eddie Houghton’s Nor Bay won twice for him early in the spring as did Charles Heekin’s In Ferm.
Mr. Hendriks, a 21-year-old University of Delaware student, rides first string for the Burly Cocks’ stable, which earned him victories aboard Mrs. Miles Valentine’s Ulises, Betty Moran’s Otelo and Retador, and Pillar Farms’ Chammsky, who won the National Steeplechase at Fair Hill and the Midsummer at Monmouth Park. Hendriks also picked up two outside stakes scores for Jonathan Sheppard, riding Double Reefed in the Delta Bear Stems Cup at Atlanta and the Pillar Stakes at High Hope. Those four stakes helped bring his mid-season money total to $121,225, or slightly ahead of Mr. Houghton’s $120,764.
Mr. Fishback. a five-time NSHA champion (1971, ’73, 74, ’75 and ’76) is riding at an incredible 45 percent with nine wins from only 20 mounts. The 37-year-old from Camden, S.C., riding exclusively for Mr. Sheppard, won five races including the Im
