In only 15 days of hunt racing spread over a period of nine weeks the 1985 steeplechase season will be history.
Never has the fall season promised so much in excellent racing and purse money, however short those nine weeks might seem. Horsemen can expect $616,000 in prize money to be distributed over the period.
The inaugural Meadow Brook Races at Old Westbury, N. Y., is one of two new race meetings that brighten the picture this fall. Conceived by Rick Pack of the Polo Group, Ltd., the Old Westbury meeting on Sunday, Sept. 22, will return sporting’s golden age of racing to Long Island and the former estate of the late F. Ambrose Clark.
Set on the grounds of the College at Old Westbury', the new race course encompasses a portion of the polo fields and Mr. Clark’s old gallops.
Highly successful in promotion on a national level of various polo tournaments in the northeast. Mr. Pack and his colleagues have neatly packaged the race card and enticed a sleek new sponsor into the sport. The Mazda Steeplechase Stakes at about two miles over the national fences is expected to draw a slim but highly competitive field to the post for the start of the $30,000 feature.
