Joseph J. Murphy
Joseph James Murphy, 49, of Carter St., New Canaan, Conn., died Sept. 3 in Norwalk Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Murphy was the son-in-law of Mrs. Brown Miller, of Sperryville.
Mr. Murphy, a resident of New Canaan since 1982, was vice president for national marketing at the U.S. Tobacco Company in Greenwich.
He was bom in Glen Cove, Long Island, N.Y. on December 12, 1935, and was the son of Lillian Gremelsbacker Murphy and the late Joseph Murphy. He graduated in 1957 from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass, and received a master of business administration degree in 1962 from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Mrs. Luanne Miller Murphy; two sons, Michael Murphy \nd Mark Murphy, both of New Canaan; a brother, Thomas Murphy, of Monticello, N.Y.; and a sister, Patricia Murphy, of Glen Cove.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Sept. 6 in St. Aloysius’ R.C. Church and interment was in Lakeview Cemetery.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Joseph Murphy Scholarship Fund, do New Canaan High School, Farm Road, New Canaan, Ct. 06840.
This fund was established for a needy student to attend college.
Thompson Lake
closed to stock
G. Richard Thompson Lake in Fauquier County is closed through Oct. 1 to all public fishing in an attempt to restock.
Virginia Game Commission officials closed the lake Tuesday.
According to biologist Ed Steinkoenig, the lake had been stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass but it has never maintained a balanced population. The restocking project is expected to restore some balance and allow the sport fishery to maintain that balance through natural reproduction.
Thompson Lake is located between Markham and Paris on Va. 688.
