father, “Mikey” Smithwick, is in the Steeplechasing Hall Of Fame at Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Mikey Smithwick consistently has been among the top trainers in the country since he began training some 30 years ago after a successful career as a jump jockey. In 1984 he finished fifth in the NSHA standings, saddling 12 winners over fences and one winner on the flat. This year he is currently seventh in the trainer standings.
Dorothy Smithwick, Speedy’s mother, also is an accomplished trainer, who conditioned several sanctioned race winners this past season.
Speedy works with his mother at Sunnybank Farm, Middleburg, an 1,800-acre operation which was owned by Mrs. Smithwick’s father, the late S. H. R. Fred.
Horses stabled at the farm are there either to be broken, trained or recuperate from injury or illness, the latter type having been sent there from the track by Mikey Smithwick who has a farm in Hydes, Md.. An average of 30 horses are usually in
