In 1985 he has so far won five sanctioned races, three over brush fences, one over timber and one on the flat, and currently is sixth in money won and ninth in races won on the rider standings for the year.
Among Speedy’s '85 wins are the Bolla Hard Scuffle Steeplechase and the Iroquois steeplechase, both on Mrs. Michael Sanger’s Uncle Edwin. During the Virginia spring point-to-point circuit this year Speedy won the Rider of the Year award by winning six races over fences, including the prestigious Rokeby Bowl and Eustis Cup.
“That was kind of nice,” Speedy admits. “I’d never won anything like that before. I told everyone the only reason I did it was because Randy Waterman was retired and Don Yovanovich was injured! (Those two riders dominated the local point-topoint seaspns in years past.) I didn t ride that many races; I was away quite a lot. But, I had some very nice horses and I got lucky.”
Some of Speedy’s most memorable wins have been in timber races. But, he also has proven he is a versatile jockey who is equally at home on a speeding hurdle horse as on a slow-paced, high-jumping timber horse. Five of Speedy’s wins in 1984 came in hurdles races and three of his ’85 wins to date have been over hurdle fences.
But, for race fans Speedy is perhaps better known for his timber racing prowess. In his own mind, two races from 1984 particularly stick out.
