The fall season will crown the champions, in much the same way flat racing does. Flatterer will have to get more exercise than a van ride to make the Eclipse Award a shoo-in for Le Sauteur has outstepped him in high class wins so far this year.
In the timber ranks, John R. Neal’s Prince Saran has been put away for the year after winning three sanctioned races including May’s Virginia Gold Cup, Mrs. Willard A. Speakman Ill’s Our Steeplejack won two in Maryland including the Maryland Hunt Cup, Jeremy Gillam’s 1983 Timber Horse of the Year Redgate broke down in Kentucky, Arthur W. Arundel’s Sugar Gee has won three races and just could do it under Charlie Fenwick’s guidance.
Nothing in horse racing is a sure thing, but as Charles Dickens wrote, “Ride on! Rough-shod if need be, smooth-shod if that will do, but ride on! Ride on over all obstacles, and win the race.”
