A unique rule in steeplechase claiming.races is that spectators are eligible to claim a horse if they so desire. At regular flat race meets only owners or trainers running a horse in that particular meet are eligible to claim a horse.
Steeplechasing is an exciting spectator sport because of its fast pace and the inherent thrills and danger that come with the jumps and the knowledge that 1,000-pound animals born to run are being controlled by men and women weighing at most 150 pounds.
Besides the racing, however, steeplechasing also is very popular because of what goes on between races and off the race course. For many spectators those are the most important aspects of a steeplechase meet. The people watchers and partiers may be lucky to see one race the whole afternoon.
The sport is unique in that respect because of the intense excitement during the races, followed by the opportunity to relax and party in between, during and after the races in a beautiful country setting.
It is no wonder that steeplechasing is one of the largest spectator events in the Old Dominion, often drawing crowds of from 5,000 to 30,000, depending on the location and size of the meet.
