Three Wakefield School seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists for 1985-86. The three students winning this important national distinction are Tara Y. Welty, of Washington, Bill Meuse, of Berryville, and Elise Maar, of Front Royal.
Miss Welty has been a student at Wakefield since first grade. Meuse entered Wakefield in grade 7, and Miss Maar came to the school in grade 9.
The three Wakefield seniors are among 15,000 students nation-wide who have been named semifinalists
this fall and who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for Merit Scholarships.
These young people entered the 1986 Merit Program by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMQT) in 1984 when they were juniors. The semifinalists
are the highest scorers in each state and represent less than half of one percent of a state’s secondary school graduating seniors.
In addition to the semifinalists, severt Wakefield seniors have been named National Merit Commended
Students for 1985. These students scored in the top two percent of graduating seniors in the nation.
Included in this category are Mary Beth Nayne, Duane Funk, Rae Marie Lutes, Meera Maheswaren, Nancy Massie, Lorraine Shea
and Lawrence Tarr. All together, Wakefield’s Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students constitute one-third of the senior class.
