“The Gold Cup and the timber race at Fair Hill (the Foxcatcher Hounds Steeplechase) were my two biggest thrills of 1984,” Speedy admits. “Both were very close, well-fought races.”
For spectators the 1984 Gold Cup was one of the most exciting races of the spring season as Speedy, riding Dr. Joseph M. Rogers' Constantine, came flying up the Broadview stretch from 12 lengths behind 1982 Gold Cup winner Prince Saran to get ahead at the wire by a nose.
The Foxcatcher also was very exciting as Speedy gave an excellent ride on William T. Reed's Crocodile Fears to edge out Paul E. Cramer's Cookin' N' Lookin’ at the wire. The 1983 Gold Cup winner Private Gary and Timber Horse of the Year Redgate were also in that race.
